Doug Smarch Jr. learned to value materials and respect all living and inanimate things, fostering a knack for uncovering hidden stories. He earned an Associates of Fine Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts (1999), making the National Dean’s List and becoming a Phi Theta Kappa member. He then received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2001) as the first TC Cannon Scholarship recipient and completed an MFA in Design Media Arts at UCLA (2004) with the Goth Scholarship.
His award-winning art is featured in collections worldwide, including at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, the National Gallery of Canada, EXPO 2005 in Japan, and the Museum of Native Americans in Zurich. Notable commissions include “Ice and Flowers” (2011) for the Haines Junction Visitors Centre and “Ignition” (2009) for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. His works are also part of collections like the Yukon Permanent Art Collection and the National Gallery of Canada.
